Innovation Capital (or Risk Capital) is an intervention upstream and/or downstream of the actual business startup of a new company. A set of investments is possible depending on the operational development stage of the company...
At launch, the need for funding is continually increasing as a result of a startup activity (development of prototypes) for which incremental investments are required. During this phase, the startup has little or no activity, its profitability will consume equity capital until the first results make it possible to finance it. From the investors’ point of view, this operational phase is the riskiest: the company is under construction and has not yet confronted the market.
During the seed phase, the company is establishing itself in the target market. The first sales enable the company to confront the product with demand, to reach the break-even point and to initiate customer traction.
To support this start of activity and to validate its offer, the company intensifies its investments, leading to a greater need for company financing. The launch of the product on the market allows investors to properly appreciate the relevance and feasibility of the company’s project, the investment risk decreases as a consequence of this better visibility.
If the market agrees to the offer, the company’s visibility improves and its profitability is now positive: its revenues from activity enable it to self-finance part of its development. In order to strengthen its position in the targeted market and support the targeted growth, the need for financing is increasing more strongly. - Serie A: in order to support the growth of its activity and to tend towards profitability through development on a national and/or international scale, the company needs to strengthen and structure itself. In order to assert itself as a leader and to strengthen customer relations, the company can turn mainly to Ventures Capital and certain seed funds to finance the acceleration of its growth.
